The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the 9-digit Portuguese taxpayer ID — needed to open a bank account, sign a lease, buy property, apply for any Portuguese visa or register a company. Portuguese law requires non-EU residents to nominate a Portuguese-resident fiscal representative to apply for one. We act as your fiscal representative, file the application at the Autoridade Tributária under Power of Attorney, and deliver your NIF by email — no flight to Portugal required.
Reside in Portugal is not a government agency and not affiliated with the Portuguese tax authority. We are a licensed Portuguese law firm acting as fiscal representative. The NIF itself is issued — free of charge — by the Autoridade Tributária. Our fee covers the legal service of fiscal representation, document preparation, in-person filing, and 12 months of mailbox monitoring.
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the 9-digit number that identifies you to the Portuguese state. It is the foundation of every other Portuguese service: without a NIF, you cannot legally rent a flat, open a bank account, get a SIM card, sign a utility contract, register a company, buy property or apply for a visa.
The NIF itself is issued free of charge by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (Portuguese tax authority). If you fly to Portugal, you can walk into any Serviço de Finanças, present your passport and proof of foreign address, and request one for €0. The catch: for any non-EU/EEA resident, Portuguese tax law (Article 130 of the CIRS) requires the applicant to nominate a fiscal representative resident in Portugal before the NIF is issued. That representative receives all correspondence from the tax authority on your behalf and is the legally responsible point of contact.
Most foreigners don't have a Portuguese friend willing to take on that legal liability for free. That's the service we sell: BOCEAN IMMIGRATION PORTUGAL, LDA acts as your fiscal representative for 12 months — a Portuguese law firm registered with the Ordem dos Advogados (Bar nº 67883F), with a Lisbon address and a Portuguese NIPC (519043731). Once we are appointed, we file your NIF application in person at Lisbon Finanças, monitor your mailbox, and forward any tax notices to you in English.
The $59 fee covers the full first year of fiscal representation, document drafting, Power of Attorney, in-person filing, and email delivery of the NIF PDF. After year one, fiscal representation renews at $120/year — cancellable anytime once you become a Portuguese tax resident yourself (which D7/D8/Golden Visa holders typically do within their first year in country).
The NIF is required for almost any interaction with the Portuguese state or a regulated Portuguese business. The most common reasons our clients get one:
Required for D7/D8 visa applications, paying suppliers in Portugal, and showing proof of funds. Most banks accept remote opening with NIF + passport.
D7, D8, D2, Golden Visa — all consulates require the NIF on the application form. The NIF is step zero for any residency project.
No Portuguese landlord or notary will sign a contract without your NIF. It appears on the lease, on the property deed and on the Cadastro Predial.
To open an LDA, you (and every shareholder) need a NIF first. The NIPC (company tax number) is issued on top of your personal NIFs at incorporation.
Most carriers (MEO, NOS, Vodafone PT) require a NIF for a monthly contract. Pay-as-you-go usually doesn't, but post-paid plans always do.
If you receive any Portuguese-source income (rental, dividends from a PT company, salary) you must declare it via your NIF on the annual IRS form.
The whole process is remote. You never have to fly to Portugal or visit a Portuguese consulate.
The Portuguese tax authority does not charge for issuing a NIF — that part is free. What you are paying for is the legal service of fiscal representation, which is mandatory for non-EU residents by Portuguese law (Article 130 CIRS). Without a Portuguese-resident representative on file, the AT will not process a non-resident NIF application.
ⓘ The official application via Finanças is free. You can request a NIF yourself, in person, at any Portuguese tax office at no cost — provided you have a Portuguese-resident fiscal representative willing to be nominated and a way to be physically present. Our service is for non-residents who want a fully remote process and a licensed law firm taking on the legal responsibility of representation.
ⓘ After year one, fiscal representation renews at $120/year. Cancellable anytime — once you become a Portuguese tax resident yourself (D7/D8/Golden Visa holders typically do during year 1 in Portugal), you no longer need a fiscal representative.

No. Reside in Portugal is the online service of BOCEAN IMMIGRATION PORTUGAL, LDA, a private Portuguese law firm registered with the Ordem dos Advogados (Portuguese Bar) under nº 67883F and with NIPC 519043731. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing the Portuguese government, the Autoridade Tributária, or any consulate. The NIF itself is issued by the Autoridade Tributária; we act as your nominated fiscal representative under Power of Attorney.
Yes. The Portuguese tax authority (Autoridade Tributária) does not charge a fee to issue a NIF. If you can travel to Portugal, walk into any Serviço de Finanças, present your passport and proof of foreign address, and — for non-EU/EEA residents — bring a Portuguese-resident fiscal representative willing to be nominated, you can obtain a NIF at no cost. Our $59 fee covers the legal service of acting as your fiscal representative for 12 months, drafting the Power of Attorney, filing your application in person on your behalf, and forwarding any tax correspondence to you in English. We sell legal representation, not government documents.
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the Portuguese taxpayer identification number — a 9-digit number issued by the Autoridade Tributária. It is the prerequisite for almost every administrative action in Portugal: bank accounts, leases, property purchases, utility contracts, visa applications, company registrations and tax filings.
3 to 7 business days from the moment you sign our Power of Attorney online and send us a copy of your passport. Your NIF is delivered by email as an official PDF document issued by the Autoridade Tributária. There is no plastic card for non-residents.
No. The whole process is remote. You sign the Power of Attorney electronically (eSignatures.com), we file in person at the Lisbon tax office on your behalf, and you receive your NIF by email.
Portuguese tax law requires non-EU/EEA non-residents to nominate a Portuguese-resident fiscal representative who receives official mail from the tax authority and ensures any tax obligations are handled. Our $59 service includes 1 year of fiscal representation; renewal is $120/year afterward, cancellable anytime (typically you cancel when you become a Portuguese tax resident under D7/D8/Golden Visa).
A clear scan/photo of your passport (data page) and a proof of address from your country (utility bill, bank statement, etc., dated within the last 3 months). That's it.
No. The NIF is just the tax number — used for any taxpayer interaction. The Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card) is the physical Portuguese national ID, issued only to Portuguese citizens and permanent residents. Non-residents only ever get the NIF.
Yes. The NIF lets you open a Portuguese bank account remotely, sign a lease, buy property, register for utilities and apply for any Portuguese visa. Most clients get the NIF months or years before relocating — it's the foundation of any Portugal project.
If you are already in Portugal on a long-stay visa or under EU free-movement rights, you can request the NIF in person at any tax office for free. Our service is specifically for non-residents who want to obtain a NIF remotely before relocating.
