Portuguese NIF for Non-Residents: 5-Step Remote Application Guide (2026)
A Portuguese NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the 9-digit tax number that anyone who deals with the Portuguese tax authority needs. You need it before you can open a bank account, buy property, sign a long-term lease, apply for any visa, or incorporate a company. Non-residents can get one remotely in 3–7 business days — here’s exactly how.
What a NIF is and why non-residents need it
The NIF is issued by the AT (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira). It identifies you in every Portuguese tax interaction. The number itself is permanent — once issued, it never changes, even if you become resident, move out, or never set foot in Portugal again.
Non-residents need it whenever they engage in any of these:
- Open a Portuguese bank account (Novobanco, ActivoBank, Millennium all require it)
- Buy or sell property in Portugal — escrow, IMT tax, deed registration all need a NIF
- Sign a long-term lease (anything ≥30 days, in practice)
- Apply for any Portuguese visa or residency permit (D7, D8, D2, Golden Visa, Citizenship)
- Register a Portuguese LDA or be a shareholder in one
- Invest in a Portuguese qualifying fund (Golden Visa pathway)
- Receive Portuguese-source income — rentals, dividends, royalties
The legal requirement non-residents always trip on: fiscal representation
By default, a non-EU/EEA non-resident who applies for a Portuguese NIF must appoint a representante fiscal — a Portuguese-resident individual or entity who is jointly liable for your tax communications. This is mandatory by law (Decreto-Lei n.º 14/2013) and the AT will not issue a NIF without it.
The fiscal representative’s role:
- Receives AT correspondence on your behalf at a Portuguese address
- Files any tax declarations required of you (typically IRS modelo 3 if you have Portuguese income)
- Is jointly liable for any tax due, up to limits set by law
If you’re a tax resident of an EU/EEA country, fiscal representation is currently optional — you can self-represent by giving the AT your home-country address. If you’re from outside the EU/EEA (US, UK, UAE, Canada, Australia, India, etc.), it’s mandatory.
The 5-step process (3–7 business days end-to-end)
Step 1 · Find a fiscal representative ($59 with us, includes 1 year)
You can’t do this part yourself unless you’re a Portuguese resident. The representative must be: a Portuguese individual with NIF, or a Portuguese entity with NIPC. Most consultancies (us included) offer 1-year fiscal representation bundled with the NIF application for a flat fee. After year one, representation renews at €100–€120/year on most providers.
Step 2 · Prepare 2 documents
- Passport (or EU national ID) — colour scan of the photo page.
- Proof of address in your country of residence — utility bill or bank statement, no older than 3 months. The address must match what you declare on the AT form. Translation is not required if it’s in English, French, Spanish or Italian; otherwise add a notarised translation.
Step 3 · Sign Power of Attorney (digitally, 5 minutes)
You sign a Portuguese-language Power of Attorney that authorises the fiscal representative to apply for and manage the NIF on your behalf. Modern providers use platforms like DocuSign or BO-PoA (our own); you sign on screen and the document is stored encrypted.
Step 4 · We submit at the AT (1–3 business days)
The submission can be done two ways:
- Online via Portal das Finanças — fastest, typically 1–3 business days for the AT to issue the NIF.
- In person at a Lisbon AT office — used only when the online flow stalls; adds 2–3 days but never blocks.
Step 5 · You receive the NIF (same-day email + PDF certificate)
Once issued, the NIF appears in our portal immediately. We email you: (a) the 9-digit number itself, (b) the official AT certificate (PDF, signed by the AT), and (c) your fiscal-representation contract. You can start using the NIF immediately for banks, leases, etc.
What it costs in 2026
| Service | Price | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Our NIF Express | $59 | NIF application + 1 year fiscal representation + AT certificate PDF + portal account |
| Cheaper online services ($19–$29) | $19–$29 | NIF only — fiscal representation usually NOT included, or only 3 months |
| Traditional Portuguese law firm | €150–€300 | NIF + 1 year fiscal rep + sometimes adds notary or apostille work |
| DIY (only EU/EEA residents) | €0 | Time spent: ~3 hours navigating Portal das Finanças in Portuguese |
Common pitfalls
- Wrong country of address. The AT cross-references your declared address. Mismatch with the utility bill = rejection. Submit a fresh utility bill if you moved in the last 6 months.
- Family-share NIFs. Each person needs their own NIF. Spouses don’t share. Kids under 18 also need their own NIF (issued in the parent’s name).
- "Tourist NIFs". Some travel-services companies issue NIFs at Lisbon airport without fiscal representation. Banks flag these. Don’t.
- Forgetting to renew fiscal rep. If your representation lapses, you can’t legally engage in many Portuguese tax matters. Our service auto-reminds 30 days before expiry.
- Using the NIF to open a bank without a Portuguese correspondence address. The bank approves; the card and PIN get sent to your fiscal rep’s office; you never see them. Pair the NIF with our Lisbon Address & Mail service from day one.
What happens to the NIF if you later move to Portugal
Nothing changes. The same NIF you got as a non-resident converts to your resident NIF on the day you register your address in Portugal. You just update the AT with your new residential address (a 2-minute online form). No re-issuance, no new number, no fee.
One thing that does change: the fiscal representation requirement drops once you become a Portuguese tax resident. You can cancel the rep service at any annual renewal date.
NIF for kids / family members
Every individual needs their own NIF — including children. For minors, the application is signed by a parent or legal guardian. The NIF is then permanently linked to the minor; when they turn 18 it’s already theirs.
Cost: the same $59 per person on our service. We can batch process up to 5 family members in a single intake (passport scans + parent PoA).
