01 · What it is
The D2 visa, with the company behind it
The D2 is Portugal's long-stay visa for entrepreneurs, self-employed professionals and founders. It gives 2 years of residency, renewable for 3 more, with permanent residency eligibility after 5 years. Citizenship follows the 2026 Nationality Law: 10 years for most foreigners, 7 for CPLP nationals.
The D2 suits non-EU nationals who:
- set up a Portuguese LDA and run it from Portugal (the most common case)
- work as established self-employed professionals with several clients
- invest in an existing Portuguese business they intend to run
In practice the D2 and the LDA go together: the company is incorporated first, or in parallel, and the visa is filed showing you will operate it from Portugal. That is why the service is one bundle.
02 · Who qualifies
Requirements in 2026
To qualify you need:
- Non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationality (EU citizens register under free movement instead)
- A viable business plan with revenue projections, capital structure, your experience and what the business brings to Portugal. AIMA examines it closely
- A clean criminal record (no conviction carrying a sentence of 1 year or more under Portuguese law)
- Share capital: legally €1 at minimum, in practice €5,000 to €10,000 so the project is taken seriously
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal (lease, ownership or invitation letter)
- Subsistence funds of €11,040 in 2026 (12 times the minimum wage)

Questions
Common questions
What is the D2 visa?
The D2 is Portugal's entrepreneur and freelancer visa. It gives long-stay residency to non-EU nationals who set up a Portuguese company or work as established self-employed professionals. Unlike the D7 and D8 it is for active business in Portugal.
Do I need a business plan?
Yes. AIMA and the consulate expect a viable plan with revenue projections, capital structure and your experience. We review it, and help you draft it if you do not have one.
How much share capital do I need?
Legally an LDA can be set up with €1. In practice AIMA reads the plan more favourably with €5,000 to €10,000. We advise on capitalisation at onboarding.
Is the LDA included?
Yes. The $2,890 bundle covers the D2 and the full LDA incorporation. State fees are billed separately in EUR.
Can I apply for IFICI?
How long does it take?
Month 1: NIFs. Months 1 to 2: LDA incorporated. Month 3: D2 filed at the consulate. Months 3 to 6: visa issued. Months 6 to 12: AIMA appointment and card. Most clients move between months 4 and 6.
Can I bring my family?
Yes. Spouse, dependent children under 18 (up to 26 if students) and dependent parents over 65 can join the same application. Each family member adds a small AIMA fee.
