01 · What it is

The D8 visa in plain English

The D8 is Portugal's residency visa for non-EU nationals who work remotely, either as employees of a foreign company or as freelancers with foreign clients. It started in October 2022. The test is simple: your income arrives from outside Portugal and is above the threshold.

It gives a 4-month entry visa from the consulate, then a 2-year residence card after biometrics at AIMA. The card renews for 3 more years, with permanent residency after 5. Citizenship is a separate, later step. Under the Nationality Law in force since 18 May 2026, the qualifying residency period is 10 years for most foreigners and 7 years for nationals of CPLP countries (Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea). The clock counts from the date the residence card is issued.

02 · Requirements

How much remote income you need

The threshold is 4 times the national minimum wage. With the minimum wage at €920 per month since 1 January 2026, that is €3,680 gross per month for the main applicant.

D8 income thresholds, 2026
HouseholdMinimum monthly income
Single applicant€3,680
With spouse or partner (+50%)€4,140
Each dependent child (+30%)+ €276
Savings reserve, separate from income€11,040 or more
The threshold can move

AIMA reassesses your income at the residence card appointment, using the minimum wage in force on that date. A mid-year increase can raise the threshold.

What counts: salary from a foreign employer, self-employment income from foreign clients (3 or more active contracts is the practical bar), royalties from non-Portuguese sources. What does not count: income from a Portuguese employer or Portuguese clients.

Documents:

  • 3 or more months of bank statements showing the income arriving
  • Employment contract or freelance contracts
  • Recent tax returns (for example US 1040 or UK SA302)
  • A Portuguese bank account
  • A criminal record certificate with apostille from your country
  • Savings of at least €11,040 at the time of application

Questions

Common questions

What is the Portugal D8 digital nomad visa?

The D8 is Portugal's visa for non-EU nationals who work remotely for foreign employers or clients. It gives a 4-month entry visa, then a 2-year residence card renewable for 3 more years, with permanent residency eligibility after 5.

What income do I need for the D8?

4 times the national minimum wage: €3,680 per month in 2026, about $4,050. It must come from foreign sources. Provide 3 or more months of bank statements, an employment contract or 3 or more client contracts, and recent tax returns.

How is the D8 different from the D7?
The D8 is for active remote work income. The D7 is for passive income such as pensions, dividends and rent. The D8 threshold is higher (€3,680 against €920 per month). Both give the same residency rights.
Does the D8 require a Portuguese employer?

No, and Portuguese employment income cannot be used to qualify. The income must be foreign-sourced. After you hold the card you may also take Portuguese employment.

Can I combine the D8 with IFICI?

Yes. IFICI is the tax incentive that replaced NHR, with a 20% flat rate on Portuguese-source income from qualifying high-skill activities for up to 10 years. We file it after your AIMA card is issued, for $1,390 on top of the D8.

What is included in $1,490?

NIF and 1 year of fiscal representation, consulate D8 file, apostille coordination, AIMA application after arrival, biometrics booking and 12 months of case management. Consulate and translation fees are billed at cost.

How long does the D8 take?

4 to 8 months from kickoff. Weeks 1 to 5: NIF and Portuguese bank account. Months 1 to 2: consulate file. Months 2 to 4: visa issued, valid 4 months. Months 4 to 8: AIMA biometrics and the 2-year card.

What if the file is rejected because of an error on your side?
The fee is refundable on a filing error, as set out in the refund policy.
