01 · What it is

The D7 visa in plain English

The D7 is Portugal's residency visa for people who support themselves on regular passive income: pensions, social security, dividends, rent, royalties or annuities. Income does not have to come from Portugal. US Social Security, a UK State Pension or rent from Madrid all qualify if you can document them.

You first receive an entry visa of 4 months from the Portuguese consulate in your country. After you arrive and give biometrics at AIMA you receive a residence card valid for 2 years, renewable for 3 more. After 5 years of legal residency you can apply for permanent residency. Citizenship is a separate, later step. Under the Nationality Law in force since 18 May 2026, the qualifying residency period is 10 years for most foreigners and 7 years for nationals of CPLP countries (Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea). The clock counts from the date the residence card is issued.

Presence

Absences from Portugal are limited to 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total, in each residency period.

Questions

Common questions

What is the Portugal D7 visa?

The D7 is Portugal's long-stay residency visa for non-EU nationals with regular passive income such as pensions, dividends, rent, royalties or annuities. It gives a 4-month entry visa, then a 2-year residence card renewable for 3 more years, and eligibility for permanent residency after 5 years.

What income do I need for the D7?

At least €920 per month for the main applicant (the 2026 minimum wage), plus 50% per spouse and 30% per dependent child. A couple with two children needs about €1,932 per month of verifiable passive income.

How is the D7 different from the D8?
The D7 is for passive income (pensions, dividends, rent). The D8 is for remote work paid by a foreign employer or foreign clients. Both give the same residency rights. The choice depends on the type of income you have.
Can I work in Portugal on a D7?
Yes, once you hold the residence card you can take Portuguese employment, freelance or start a company. Many D7 holders later combine it with IFICI registration.
What is included in $1,490?

NIF and 1 year of fiscal representation, consulate dossier preparation, apostille coordination, AIMA appointment booking and 12 months of case management. Consulate and AIMA fees, translations and insurance are billed at cost.

Can I include my family?

Yes. Spouse and dependent children can be included. Each family member adds a small consulate and AIMA fee. The income threshold rises by 50% per spouse and 30% per child, and they do not need their own income.

Do I need to live in Portugal full time?

You cannot be absent for more than 6 consecutive months, or more than 8 months in total, in each residency period. This applies to the 2-year card and to the 3-year renewal.

What if the file is rejected because of an error on your side?
The fee is refundable on a filing error, as set out in the refund policy.
