  • Absences are limited to 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total, in each residency period.
  • Register for IFICI if you qualify: IFICI tax registration.
  • Set up a Portuguese company later with the LDA service, or use a Lisbon address for your mail.
  • After 5 years of legal residency you can apply for permanent residency. Citizenship is a separate, later step. 07 · Risks

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

  • Income that looks one-off or cannot be verified. The consulate rejects it. Show regular, documented passive income.
  • Below the threshold: €920 a month for one person, rising by 50% per spouse and 30% per dependent child.
  • Missing the apostille on the criminal record certificate.
  • Staying outside Portugal more than 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total, in a residency period.
  • Assuming the consulate or AIMA will be quick. Both set their own pace.
